MS ACCESS (Database Management System)
1. Introduction & Description
Welcome to today's lesson! In this post, we will be exploring A brief introduction to Microsoft Access Database management System called MS Access for short. This is perfect for beginners who want to understand the fundamentals and for anyone looking for a quick refresher. By the end, you'll be able to understand the basic concepts and do some hands on activities like creating a table, etc.
2. Core Concepts Explained
Let's dive into the details. The first thing you need to understand is Data and Information. This is a crucial part of the process because it allows you to quickly grasp the what are the core elements of a database and how we use MS Access to actualize these basic need of organizations.
Next, we have DBMS and RDBMS as types of Database Management Systems (Softwares) that manage data and information requirements of any organization. Microsoft Access is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). It works by facilitating the collection of Rw Facts - Data and the processing of these raw facts into necessary and needed Information. A Database Management System also helps to store both data and related processed information in a storehouse for future retrieval. It also helps to query the data and information storehouse and extract needed informationfor making winformed decision. From here, we will delve straight into how to design a database. This will entail the various database objects like Tables, Queries, Forms and Reports, etc.
3. Step-by-Step Guide
Now, let's put this into practice with a few simple steps. To design a database, you take the following steps into consideration:
- Step One: You need to give the Database a Useful Name. This name should reflect the purpose of the Database. This is the foundation step of your Databse design.
- Step Two: After giving a suitable name for your Database, you will need to determine the users of the database otherwise called personalities. This step is important because it sets up the foundation for the next one.
- Step Three: The Design Process proper. You will have to decide the objects to use, like parent tables and and their related entities, quesries, forms, etc. You neeed to pay close attention to the details here to avoid common mistakes in later stages of your Database design that can complecate things and render your efforts fruitless as you will have to start afresh from scratch to get things right.
- Step Four: Now get to work implementing your design. And you're done! You have successfully completed the task.
- Next, we will take a hypothetical University called Godman University and design a database for it called GodmanUniDB. This will be a hands on- exercise as I will be describing each step, one after the other while you practice along. Any questions cn be asked using the comment section below.
